There is no such thing because babyboomers go from 1946-1964! It's possible that there could be parent-child duos that are both babyboomers and we know that parents and children rarely like the same music!

However, I know that my group of "older boomers" really likes the Beatles, Motown, and all those groups that were featured on "American Bandstand." So how can that music be healing for us? Well, there is lots of research in the field of music therapy that confirms that when people are in early stages of Alzheimer's and other dementias, the music of their "Courting years" is often the music that they still remember, can sing along with and cheers them up considerably! I've already told me daughters the music that I want to hear if, God forbid, that happens to me.

Here's one of my favorites from my "courting years." Bill Boone, are you listening?

Alice H. Do you love the movies? Then you're going to love this little tidbit of musical humor! At least I did!

Excited about his new project concept, a movie producer calls together several big stars to kick some ideas around. The project, an action docu-drama about famous composers features Stallone, Van Damme and Schwartzenegger in leading roles. The producers really want the box office 'oomph' of these three, and they are prepared to allow them to select which famous composers they will portray. "Well," starts Stallone, "I've always admired Mozart. I would love to play him." "Chopin has always been my favorite," says Van Damme. "I'll play him." Things are going well; the producers are pleased. "Sounds splendid. And who do you want to be, Arnold?" "I'll be Bach."

Come on, you know laughter is healing too!

Alice H. Particularly for aerobic workouts, music is a powerful motivator. Perhaps the most common use for this is as a diversion to take your mind off the fact that you're exercising. It distracts you from fatigue, allowing you to focus on your exercise. Listening to music has the potential to improve your mood, too. That positive mood means you may associate enjoyment with exercise and be more likely to try it again.
Research shows the rhythmic qualities of music tend to mimic patterns of physical skills. Therefore, music can enhance how quickly you pick up new movements and motion skills. For those who feel they were born with two left feet, music might make you more coordinated by helping to execute the stepping with less confusion.
Listening to the right kind of music can add an extra dimension to your workout. For example, many competitive athletes wear headphones before they race. Some of them are listening to fast-paced music to get their adrenaline flowing and get excited for the upcoming competition, while others are listening to slower-paced music to calm anxiety or nervousness.
So how do you choose music for your workout? This first depends on the intensity of the aerobic exercise chosen. The number of times the heart beats per minute, or BPM, needs to be consistent with the tempo or speed of the activity. For example, if you are swimming using the breaststroke at a rate of 100 strokes per minute, consider music that plays at 100 beats per minute. Or you could choose music that plays at 120 beats per minute and swim at one stroke every two beats, for a swimming speed of 60 strokes per minute.
Music can also be "programmed" to progress from warm-up to target heart rate and back to a cool-down resting pace to close. Warm-ups provide oxygen to muscles; reduce soreness and risk of injury. Cool-down allows blood to be pumped back up to your heart and brain.
So the next time you're lacking a little motivation to get out and go for a walk, hike or bike ride, consider charging up that ipod or mp3 player and cranking up the volume to your favorite song. It could very well change your feelings towards working out...as well as any perceptions about those young lads.

Alice H. It is derisively called "elevator music" by many of us as we turn up our noses. Still, there was time when Muzak seemed to be the trend of the future and the belief was that everyone would love having music in stores and airports and most public gathering spaces. But...time marches on and people are more sophisticated musically. There are so many options today and Muzak, the "one size fits all" musical solution no longer fits us!

(CNN) -- Muzak, the company that put pop, string-filled arrangements of rock songs in your elevator, filed bankruptcy papers Tuesday after it missed a $105 million payment to creditors.

The Muzak company is best known for background music piped into places such as elevators.

The pipeline of easy listening will continue to flow as Muzak restructures its debt during the Chapter 11 process, the company said.
"Muzak is a solid business with an outstanding customer base, but we are burdened with substantial debt obligations established over a decade ago," Muzak CEO Stephen Villa said.
Muzak's cash flows doubled in the last three years, Villa said, "demonstrating that our business continues to perform well even in today's challenging environment."
Along with its ubiquitous elevator offerings, Muzak and its 14 affiliates -- all privately owned -- produce on-hold messages and install sound systems, digital signs and drive-thru systems for retail businesses.
Bankruptcy documents showed Muzak owes its largest creditor -- U.S. Bank -- about $370 million, nearly all of it due this year.
Muzak spokeswoman Meaghan Repko said the filing was voluntary and in cooperation with the creditors.
The weakened global economy was not a factor, she said, noting the company's profits have been rising in recent years.
The Chapter 11 protections will allow Muzak time to restructure the debt, which was incurred a decade ago, she said.

Alice H. I found it quite annoying as it was a computer-generated disco sound emanating at ear-piercing levels from the majority of stores and restaurants in South Beach. I was amazed that most people seemed to be immune to it but it drove me batty!

Meanwhile, we slowly made our way off the cruise ship on Friday morning, bidding adieu to the warm azure waters of the Bahamas. It was so wonderful to be with my children and their husbands for 5 full days and after saying good-bye to Julie, Allison, Tom and Will, Liz and I stayed on in Miami for another couple of days. We went to see a movie one night and did a lot of walking in the South Beach area. We had some fabulous seafood and desserts and also were just amazed by the Art Deco hotels and restaurants. The coconut palms were everywhere and the atmosphere was totally international. I met three different Italian families that I was able to talk to about my upcoming trip to Italy. Stay tuned!

Alice H. I grew up hearing church music and loving it. Most of my ideas about who God is and who I am and what I'm here to do on this Earth, came from the hymns that we sang and the sermons I heard my father preaching! I have learned so many wonderful things through music that I don't think I could have taken in at such a deep level otherwise.

At bedtime, my father sang songs with my sister and me and we often memorized Psalms and other scrpture. I guess I could scan some things from my yearbooks of the two high schools I attended. We started having dances at school and at church in the 7th grade! That seems a little young to me now but at the time I definitely loved it! Before that, I went to Cancun to attend NSA's Cancun University because it sounded so awesome and exciting. I've since studied with quite a few internet marketing "gurus" and one thing they have all emphasized is the power of collaboration with other like-minded people and the power of joint ventures. It was as a result of that idea that I started my website called http://www.drcashprefers.com/ which is my place for recommending to you the:

music products and vendors that I use and recommend

the place where I get most of my books and CD's/DVD's (Amazon)

my source for information and inspiration on prosperity-thinking and posperity living!

the people and organizations that I get my website, shopping cart, and affiliate marketing techniques from

I'll admit: I do pretty well on the internet now! Although I don't enjoy watching violent, bloody scenes, one of the movies nominated is one I hope will win. It's called "No Country for Old Men" and the reason I want it to win is that my own daughter, Elizabeth Cash, worked on it!! She's go to be really excited too!!
According to www.mfiles.co.uk, the Academy Awards idea originated in 1927-28 as a method for the film industry to recognise individual achievements within its ranks and at the same time do some self-promotion, the "Academy" being the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences or AMPAS which originated the idea. The idea has progressed over the years, with different rules and methods developing over time but the basic premise is the same. There are a number of Awards for "Best Picture", "Best Director", etc. and films and the people involved go through a process of nomination. These days there are generally five official nominees for each Award, and the members of the Academy then vote to select a winner who receives a statuette known as an "Oscar" though the origin of the nickname is now uncertain. It was 1934 before film music was recognised with its own awards, and in the earlier years the winners in the music and other technical categories received a Plaque rather than the famous Statuette. But since 1946 there have been two or three statuettes awarded for music categories. Usually these are for "Original Score" or "Dramatic Score" and "Original Song" but often including a third award whose name has tended to change over the years for "Musical Score", "Music Adaptation", "Comedy Score" or similar.
Hope you're watching too!

Alice H. For a long time, the history of music was thought to be continually evolving so something that was more than 300-400 hundred years old was thought to be "interesting" but not particularly relevant. Things are different now and musicologists are going back and reviving, researching and performing music that is ancient. Enjoy this article about the "Indian Pow-wow."

American Indians have held ceremonial gatherings since ancient times, but intertribal powwows—in which members of several tribes convene to socialize and exchange cultural traditions—are a more recent practice.
“Everyone claims that their powwow was the first,” says Tara Browner, 43, associate professor of ethnomusicology and American Indian Studies at the University of California in Los Angeles and author of Heartbeat of the People: Music and Dance of the Northern Pow-wow.
Contemporary intertribal powwows began in the 1880s with the establishment of Indian reservations, but whether it was the Poncas in Oklahoma or the Winnebagos in Nebraska who first welcomed all tribes is debatable.
“The concept of powwows goes back before European contact, but they were strictly clannish,” Browner says. The word “powwow” is derived from the Algonquian word “pau wau,” meaning “he dreams” and is associated with medicine men and healing.
[…]”What’s important about powwows is the sense of community,” says Browner, who is Choctaw and a dancer. “You feel strong and proud of who you are, and there’s a comfort level there for just a weekend. All families have stories of sadness and displacement, and you’re with people who understand your background and how it shaped who you are.”
Finding a powwow isn’t a problem, Browner says.
“I tell my students that there’s a powwow within three hours’ driving distance of anyone in the United States.”
This year’s Gathering of Nations Powwow is scheduled April 28-30. I would really hate to be limited to just one. But, let me see if I can choose my top 5. And keep in mind, that's today. If I had to choose my top five tomorrow they could very well be different. So.....today I choose: (not in any particular order)

1. Sealed with a kiss

2. Cupid

3. Up on the Roof

4. Downtown

5. Big Girls Don't Cry

Just writing those names down bring back memories of boyfriends, and football games, and certain outfits and certain teachers. WOW!

What IS that?? Well, now a I know that a lot of it is brain chemistry and the release of endorphins and dopamine. Are you a babyboomer? Are there songs that you loved back in high school. Then go listen to some of them! Nowadays you can download all kinds of music and have them in your car or your home or wherever you want it. Try it and enjoy!!!

Alice H. My father was a Methodist minister and all five kids were at church every time the doors opened. I guess that church music was the first music that I really loved and that made me feel safe, secure, and loved. I loved singing hymns out in the congregation and I loved hearing the choir sing each Sunday and the organist playing her preludes and postludes. When I was about in fifth grade, they started a junior choir and I thought that was heavenly! Of course I was already taking piano lessons when we moved to Clemson in 1957 and I continued those in Clemson.

One of my fondest memories of music in Clemson was being taken to a concert at the old Field House given by the Obenkirchen Children's Choir. I never knew that children could make such a beautiful sound and I wanted to be in a choir like that too!

Because we lived by the church, up on "Holy Hill," we were also across the street from the football team's practice field. We could watch the team doing their spring training but we could also hear the marching band practice. Even today when I hear snare drums I think of the Clemson Marching Band and I can smell the Fall leaves and feel the excitement.

As I became a pre-teen and then a teen, I had a little transistor radio at my bedside and I learned all the popular songs of '61 and '62. I also began going to dances at the school, in the church basement and at the "Y Cabin. You should have seen me doing the "Twist" and the "Mashed Potato!" (I should probably do more of that now!)

Well, gotta stop for tonight. I'm getting ready to return to Clemson on Thursday to speak and I'm creating more CD's to take with me and working on some piano pieces to play during my presentation.

If you live in Clemson or anywhere near by, please come to see me! I'll be speaking at 7:30 on the Calhoun lecture series. Call Donna Arterburn for more info at 864-656-0605 . Hope to see you there!

Alice H. As a babyboomer I know that I had a tiny record player as a little girl, a radio of my own starting at about age 8, a transistor radio as a teen. Then came my stereo in college, a cassette player later, 8-tracks as a young married, then CD's and now MP3's in my iPod! Wow! That's a lot of access to music. So probably we babyboomers have heard more different music than any generation plus we've gotten it on TV and had more and more access to live concerts than any previous generation!

I'd love to know your thoughts on this topic, especially if you're a babyboomer!

Also, don't forget to visit my other site:http://www.blogger.com/www.babyboomerarticles.com.

Alice H. They were attending a convention about "mature adult programming" or M.A.P. and I was invited to do the opening session! The topic was "Baby Boomers and Music: An Inseparable Connection" and we had a great time! First of all, we listened to loads of baby boomer hits from the 50's, 60's, and 70's and got up and danced, clapped and snapped fingers to all of these hits. We listened to everything from Elvis and The Temptations to Carole King and The Carpenters. We talked about the music of our childhoods and teen years and the messages we learned from those songs.

The setting was beautiful Unicoi State Park near Helen, Georgia and we were in the main lodge, a perfect setting for chanting, toning and drumming. We talked some about that and agreed that maybe next time we'll do a workshop on that.

All of these vivacious activity directors were participating fully and sharing some fascinating stories from their own musical backgrounds. If YOU are a baby boomer or have some in your family, you can always get a smile if you play the fabulous babyboomer music from the 60's, 70's and 50's! Give it a try!

Alice H. I think you'll find this information from "Times Online" today very interesting:

Soothing sounds
MUSIC does not only soothe the savage breast, it is also the best way to calm people undergoing minor surgery or an invasive test, reports an authoritative study covering more than 1,400 women.
Researchers working for the Cochrane Collaboration scrutinised the results of 11 trials on anxiety in women undergoing a colposcopy, the cervical exam that follows a suspect smear result. They report that three common methods for lowering anxiety: leaflets, counselling and videos had no effect. But playing cool music to women undergoing the test reduced their fear levels significantly.

Alice H. Prof. Richard Spalding conducted the chorus at the music school for my last coupleof years there and I had not seen him in several years even though he is actually in the same neighborhood. I've been listening to some of the music that we sang in chorus recently and just decided that I'd like to have him and his wife over for lunch. It definitely brought back lots of great memories for me and, as they say, "a good time was had by all." The picture are of Prof. Spalding and myself and also a picture of the ice cream cake I made for our dessert. Now, on to the gym!! Far too many never came back, including friends of mine and boyfriends of mine. It makes me very sad to think that the same thing is happening today with all the young men and women going overseas, never to return to their families and friends. Is there anything all that can help? Today, on Memorial Day, we're honoring all the fallen men and women in every war. One thing that will happen during every service will be the playing of some of our best patriotic music. Of course we'll hear "Oh Beautiful for Spacious Skies," "My Country Tis of Thee," and "Proud to be an American," among other things. What will this mean for you? Do you find these songs healing, purposeful, and uplifting? I know that the composers who wrote them wanted them to make a difference in your loife and to inspire feelings of patriotism and gratitude. What songs do you want to hear today on Memorial Day? Please let me know.

Click Here to Hear this Music

Alice H. But then I did some research and found that it was true...George Bush was attending an event in the Jamestown 400-year anniversary celebration and decided he would like to try his hand and conducting an orchestra. He "slyly" tapped on the conductor's shoulder and indicated that he would like to give it a try. At first she didn't recognize him (Joanne Fallon) but when she realized who was asking to conduct, she turned the baton right over to him! Well, one of the special categories of healing music is the music that an individual "fell in love to" or "courted to." For we baby boomers that's going to be anythings from the early rock and rollers like Elvis or Jimmy Dean to the Beatles, Jimi Hendricks or The Who. When we are in our 80's and 90's, there's a very good chance that we'll want to hear that music and that it will make us feel warm and fuzzy and really good inside. Strange? Not really. It's the music that first gave us a physical rush when we danced to it or kissed our boyfriend or girlfriend to. There's a powerful connection between our feelings, our hormone rushes and the music we're listening to at that moment.

I've already started trying to re-collect some of my favorites now that so much music is being re-issued on CD or MP3. As I expected, I loved it!

The haunting melodies, played on ancient Irish instruments, the fantastic dancing and the audience interaction combine to provide an evening of sheer and total jubilation. This was at least the third time I had seen it, not to mention that I own a videotape of the show. It changes just a little bit each year but it never fails to exhilerate me and make me want to learn more about Celtic and other ancient Irish music. Yes, Cash is an Irish name but it is my married name. Nevertheless, I must have some Irish blood or DNA in me or I don't think I would respond so powerfully to these melodies, harmonies, and rhythms. What about you? Do you like Riverdance?

Alice H. There are so many different kinds of oldies for us babyboomers depending on whether you were born closer to 1946 or 1964! Basically, the music that you listened to from ages 13-20 (give or take 2 or 3 years on either side) will be yor best "oldies" music! As we babyboomers age, the marketers are coming out with loads of CD collections of all kinds of "our" music. I'd love to see some DVD's of American Bandstand, wouldn't you? I never missed it! I hear old Eagles tunes and old Chicago tunes on CSI, ER, Law and Order and all kinds of shows it seems. Of course I love it! When I was actually living in the 60's and 70's, I was almost completely immersed in classical music so I heard this music but never knew the name of the song or the name of the band. It wasn't until the summer of 1970 when I worked at a beautiful outdoor Performing Arts Center that I finally got into the swing of things. I was a huge fan of Cat Stevens, Elton John, Chicago, Three Dog Night, and many, many others. It just seems a little strange that suddenly I'm hearing these songs everywhere I turn! My own family of origin happens to have five baby boomers: myself, born in 1948, a sister born in 1950, a brother born in 1952, a sister born in 1955 and a sister born in 1960. We all love music and grew up with radios, hifi's and finally stereo's blaring. Even though we were preacher's kids we loved the popular music of our day. I have fond memories of my sister and me standing on the sidewalk outside our home, holding sticks as pretend microphones and singing "Standing on the Sidewalk, Watching all the Girls Go By."
When I was about six years old I started hearing about Elvis. Now my Daddy was a preacher and in S.C. in the mid-50's, Elvis was definitely not someone my parents wanted me listening to. I remember hearing "Jailhouse Rock" and "Blue Suede Shoes" on the radio at a neighbor's house and feeling scandalized but I wasn't sure why.
I turned 13 in 1961 and vividly remember listening to the Beatles sing "I Wanna Hold Your Hand." I thought their music was wonderful and to my surprise, my parents let me stay home from church one Sunday night to watch the Beatles appear on Ed Sullivan. I was thrilled! I loved all the Beatles music as well as the Motown groups and most of the British invasion groups like Herman's Hermits and the Dave Clark Five. I loved Petula Clarkand Dusty Springfield and probably day-dreamed that one day I might have a group of my own. Instead, in real life, I turned to classical music and practiced scales and Beethoven sonatas for hours a day. Still, while a piano major in college, I fell in love with the music of Elton John and Cat Stevens. I bought a book of Elton's top hits to play on the piano when my professor wasn't around and it brought me wicked good fun!
In 1971 I got married. You can see the wedding picture on my site http://www.babyboomerarticles.com. My husband and I both loved the music of Elton John and soon I discovered Billy Joel, the piano man, and so many others. Every decade for the boomers has had so many memorable hits. Do you remember the first time you heard "Afternoon Delight"? I do and just hearing a couple of bars of any of the above songs takes me instantly to another time and place. Music is magical! Music is mystical! Music is better than a plane ticket for taking you to another time and place when life was simpler and teenagers were in love. Let's always remember this music and it's messages of "Give Peace a Chance," "Breaking Up is Hard to do," "Up, Up and Away!"

Alice H. I remember him well. I was upset when he pardoned Richard Nixon because I didn't think Nixon should "get away with it." Now I understand that it did allow the country to move on and get past all of the scandal that Nixon brought to our country. As always, music brought back lots of memories yesterday. The orchestra played beautifully the Navy Hymn that had played continuously during John Kennedy's funeral. Denice Graves sang "The Lord's Prayer" like an angel, as she did during the service for 9/11 victims. As we baby boomers age, the amount of music associated with momentous events grows and grows. For me his most famous song was "I Feel Good" and I can't help but get a big smile on my face when I hear that song. that song actually does make me feel good and his sincerity just comes right through. James Brown wrote a lot of songs that mean a lot to many people. I can't say that most of it was my cup of tea but I certainly respect the man as a very creative musician who had many barriers to break down in order to acheive the success he did acheive. It brings back happy memories, gives us energy, calms us down and generally feeds our spirits. How does this happen?? Well, there is a process called entrainment, whereby the components of music: rhythm, melody, mood of music, etc., synchronize with your own biorhythms (heartbeat and breathing). Sooo, when you listen to a favorite song from the 50's, 60's or even 70's, your brain and body are flooded with memories, endorphines, dopamine and other "feel-good" chemicals. It's the best way to get a "natural high." Give it a try!

Also, wanted to let you know about a Holiday Sale on my website for those of you who might still have some last-minute shopping to do. I'm offering a free electronic version of any of my products if you buy the hard copy of a CD, tape, or book! It's a deal you can't beat! Also, if you want to purchase a personal consult with me about a problem or diagnosis or just how music can improve your life, http:www.HealingMusicEnterprises.com/NeedLast-minutegifts.htm

Alice H. Songs like "I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus, "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Raindeer" and "All I want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth." Hearing those songs makes me smile and my brain is flooded with memories which in turn creates and flood of serotonin and endorphins. While taking a walk one evening in my old neighborhood I began thinking of that music that I loved and danced to and went to sleep to every night. I felt a little sad about all the things I didn't know and understand back then and then I thought of the song "It's My Party and I'll Cry if I want to." I remember hearing it for the first time when I was riding home from Jr. High on the city bus. I loved the idea that it was my party and I could cry if I wanted to. The year before, I had danced to and liked the song "Big Girls Don't Cry" so this was the opposite sentiment and I prefered being able to cry if I wanted. Still do!

Alice H. You know who they are!! I'd love to know what your favorite baby boomer music is. Research done by music therapists and others has shown that it's the music of our courting years that we really love when we hit our "golden years."

Make sure to know when your favorite music is from your courting years and write it down for later. At the same time, the movies I went to were Doris Day and Hayley Mills and Annette Funicello. By the 70's I was listening to the Carpenters and all of the co-dependent messages about not being able to live with "whomever, whatever..."

Sadly, many of the clients I work with have never questioned these premises and as a result they are in miserable relationships and have unrealistic ideas and expectations of themselves and their spouses. One of things I do as a therapist is to look at some of these erroneous and faulty beliefs and re-write them to match their dreams and goals for life.

Interested in doing this? It was impressive! Now I'm looking forward to the 50th reunion and wondering how we'll all look then.

A few weeks ago I had listed some of my favorite songs from 1966 and sure enough that's what the DJ was playing. I still am amazed at how music can bring back soooo many memories. Apparently, the neuro-hormones and neurotransmitters that course through our brains and bodies when we're teenagers really lock in the associations between the music and the "feel-good feelings!" Today, we can listen to the same songs and get a surge of great memories and feelings. And you don't even have to be a member of the Class of 1966! :-)

As I thought about my reunion I started to think and read more and more about the Baby Boomer Generation. I know that as we age we are going to want more and more information about retirement, investments, health issues and lots more. Now, I have created a site called "BabyBoomerArticles.com" Please visit my site and tell your friends about it as one-stop shopping for information of all kinds geared to Baby Boomers. Remember, http://www.babyboomerarticles.com/.

I'll stop for now because I've got some other exciting information for you later this week!

As always, feel free to forward this to all your friends and interested folks!

Keep the music playing!

Alice

Alice H. I only went there for one year, my final year in high school. Even though I was not a happy camper at first, I met some great kids, had some wonderful teachers (Bobo, Barlow, and Butler) and danced and dated to some great music! Much of this music brings back surges of memories and emotion. Rather than worry about it, there is something contructive you can do! There is ample research documenting the fact that people who have Alzheimer's disease can often remember, recognize, and sing along to the music of their "courting years!" In study after study, patients who no longer recognized their family members or even remembered their own name, heard some music on the piano, another instrument or just people singing, and the patient started singing along too, often remembering verse after verse.

So what can YOU do? Start making a list of all the music you loved when you were in high school, college and probably through your 20's. It could be the best medicine you have!

Alice H.
